Google billion dollar spending spree for YouTube

11:25 Tue 10 October 2006

So, the analysts may yet be proved wrong, as Google coughs up $1.65 billion for YouTube. The popular video-sharing site is still yet to make any profit, so WebTwitcher will be watching with interest over the following months to see how their business model develops. There is a good summary of the run up to the purchase on Boing Boing today, as well as comment in today's Guardian.

If you want to watch a message from Chad and Steve (the YouTube founders), they have, of course, posted a video on their site all about the purchase. They are obviously very excited and WebTwitcher is sure they are on the start of an almighty pub crawl...

Youtube is getting paid that much because they took the courage of taking their 'hobby' serious.Thats the difference between them and the many "other" free video hosting sites.
